DELAY, BUT FOR HOW LONG?

For months now, news organizations and Albany insiders have been telling us fracking is imminent in New York. First we were told Governor Cuomo would announce his plans by midsummer, then it was before Labor Day, then just after Labor Day. All of these deadlines have come and gone, and still no fracking.

Now, in a move that will delay fracking for at least a few months, the Cuomo Administration has announced it will conduct an internal review of the health risks associated with fracking.

Does this indicate a sudden concern for the safety of New Yorkers? Apparently not. Governor Cuomo said the study may actually be “expediting the process” by preventing lawsuits that could drag on for “months or years”.

The proposed review, which will be done by the state, falls far short of the independent health impact assessment demanded by health care professionals. If the governor thinks it will dissipate resistance to fracking, he’s certainly mistaken.

DIRECT ACTION AND ARRESTS

On September 12th, six Stop the Pipeline activists were arrested in New York City after blocking construction of the pipeline being built to deliver shale gas to Manhattan. This was the third time this month that anti-fracking protests have ended in arrests.

And this is just the beginning. More than 5,000 New Yorkers have already pledged to oppose fracking with non-violent actions. The message to Cuomo is clear – either protect the state, or face a wave of protests that will cause progressive New Yorkers to support a third party candidate in 2014, ruining Cuomo’s chances of ever making it to the White House.

Two out of three people who find out about fracking think the risks aren’t worth the rewards.
