HANDS OFF HOME RULE

In New York State, “home rule” guarantees the right of a town or a city to determine its own future. Over the past year, more than a hundred municipalities have exercised their right to enact bans and moratoria that prohibit fracking. These ordinances now protect more than one and one half million New Yorkers, and virtually every week more towns and cities adopt laws and ordinances that bar fracking.

We expected home rule would come under attack from the gassers, and that’s borne out by documents obtained by the Environmental Working Group.  They show a concerted effort on the part of industry lobbyists to convince the DEC that it isn’t obliged to respect local ordinances when issuing drilling permits.  Still, we weren’t prepared to hear Governor Cuomo cynically suggest that he was inclined to respect local laws – only so long as they don’t interfere with his plans for fracking!

Tell Governor Cuomo to respect local fracking prohibitions – even if they don’t suit his plans to frack New York.   TAKE ACTION!

FIRE FIELD REDUX

We’ve known for some time that the Cuomo Administration doesn’t give a damn about the public health threat posed by fracking, and the DEC has ignored legitimate scientific studies in favor of self-serving “data” downloaded from corporate websites. Nevertheless it was still a surprise to find out that the state official responsible for controlling greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas wells doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with greenhouse gas emissions. Director of Mineral Resources Bradley J. Field signed a petition claiming “there is no convincing evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane or other greenhouse gases is causing… disruption of the Earth’s climate.” You can read more about Bradley J. Field here – and see why Catskill Citizens has been calling for removal of Mr. Field for years.

Fire Field Now! TAKE ACTION!

“FRIEND” GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO

The Governor may ignore our letters, phone calls, emails and faxes, so let’s try another approach: let’s friend him on Facebook – and turn his homepage into one of the biggest online anti-fracking sites in the country!
